Website erstellen lassen Schweiz – Kosten & Ablauf erklärt

Summary: Swiss SMEs face the question of what a professional website really costs and what the process looks like with an agency. This article explains price ranges, typical project phases and the difference between agencies, freelancers and website builders. You will learn which preparations are needed and what matters when making the decision.

Having a website built in Switzerland – what does it really cost?

CHF 3’000 or CHF 50’000? If, as an SME owner, you search for the cost of a professional website, you will find figures that could hardly differ more. That is unsettling – understandably so. After all, there is simply no official industry statistic on website prices in Switzerland. What does exist are publicly available guide quotes from Swiss agencies, our own project experience and a few hard facts that will help you put things in context.

If you would like to have your website built, one thing is clear: the investment pays off. According to the ICT survey of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO, 2023), around 89 % of all Swiss companies with ten or more employees have their own website. Among micro-enterprises the rate is considerably lower – and that is precisely where untapped potential lies.

Price range: what a website costs in Switzerland

The price range depends on three factors: scope, complexity and provider. To give you a realistic idea, here are the typical ranges as they emerge from publicly published price lists and guide quotes from Swiss digital agencies:

  • Simple company website (5–8 pages, WordPress or Webflow): approx. CHF 3’000 – 8’000. Sufficient for trades businesses, practices or consultancies that need a solid online business card.
  • Extended SME website with CMS, basic SEO optimisation and responsive design: approx. CHF 8’000 – 20’000. This includes custom design, several subpages and a well-thought-out structure.
  • Custom solution with configurators, booking systems or interfaces: approx. CHF 20’000 – 50’000+. For companies whose website is meant to be an active business tool.
  • Online shop (WooCommerce or Shopify): approx. CHF 10’000 – 40’000. If you want to have an online shop built, you must reckon with product maintenance, payment integration and logistics integration.

Hourly rates of Swiss web agencies typically range between CHF 140 and 220 – depending on region and agency size. A Zurich office tends to charge more than a small agency in the Emmental. In return, it often brings specialised teams.

The hidden costs many forget

What many SMEs underestimate: the website itself is only one part of the bill. On top come ongoing costs for web hosting, domain fees, SSL certificates, maintenance and content updates. Expect CHF 50 – 150 per month for hosting and upkeep for a simple site. For larger projects, a maintenance contract can cost CHF 200 – 500 per month.

And then there is your own effort: writing copy, supplying images, giving feedback. Do not underestimate this point.

Agency, freelancer or website builder – the honest comparison

The decision between an agency, a freelancer and building it yourself is not primarily a question of price. It is a question of your time, your standards and your long-term strategy.

Website builder (Wix, Squarespace, Jimdo)

Cheap to start, often under CHF 500 per year. For clubs or hobby projects this may be enough. For an SME that wants to be found on Google, website builders quickly reach their limits. Limited SEO options, restricted design and dependence on the provider are the biggest drawbacks. And here comes the counter-intuitive observation: some SMEs end up spending more money because they first try a website builder, give up in frustration and then commission an agency after all – losing six to twelve months in the process.

Freelancer

An experienced freelancer can deliver a solid SME website for CHF 4’000 – 12’000. The advantage: personal contact, often shorter lines of communication. The disadvantage: if the person drops out – through illness, a full workload or a career change – you are left without support. Freelancers are also rarely all-rounders in design, development, SEO and copywriting at the same time.

Agency

More expensive by comparison, but with clear advantages: a well-rehearsed team of designers, developers and SEO specialists, structured processes and long-term support. Especially if your website is meant to be a business tool – with search engine optimisation, Google Ads integration and conversion optimisation – a full-service agency is the more sustainable choice.

The typical process: how a website project works in Switzerland

Many Swiss SMEs expect a website to be up in two to three weeks. Reality looks different. For a professional project, expect 6 to 12 weeks – depending on scope and your own response time during feedback rounds.

Phase 1: briefing and strategy (weeks 1–2)

This is where the foundations are laid. What are your business goals? Who is your target audience? Which functions do you need? A good agency asks uncomfortable questions in this phase – for example whether your existing online positioning works at all. The result is a requirements specification or project specification that both sides sign.

Phase 2: concept and design (weeks 2–5)

Based on the briefing, the page structure (sitemap) is created first, then wireframes and finally the visual design. This is where you see for the first time what your website will look like. Two feedback rounds are usual. Important: change requests in this phase are normal and inexpensive. After programming, it gets expensive.

Phase 3: development and content (weeks 4–9)

The approved design is transferred into a working CMS – WordPress is still the global standard and, according to W3Techs (as of January 2025), powers around 43 % of all websites worldwide. In parallel, copy is finalised, images are optimised and SEO basics are implemented: meta titles, descriptions, clean URL structures and fast loading times.

Why does SEO matter from the start? According to a CTR study by Semrush (2023), over 50 % of all clicks go to the first three organic Google results. Anyone who launches a website without an SEO foundation gives away visibility from day one.

Phase 4: testing and launch (weeks 9–12)

Before going live, testing takes place on different devices and browsers. Forms, loading times, mobile display, privacy policy – everything has to be right. Then comes the launch, followed by a monitoring phase in which technical problems are fixed quickly.

What you should prepare as the client

The real problem with delayed website projects is not the agency. It is missing client material. Anyone who does not deliver copy, images and access credentials on time extends the project by weeks. Ideally, prepare the following before the project starts:

  • Copy and content: At least raw copy for the most important pages (home, about us, services, contact). Professional agencies offer copywriting services – this costs extra but saves time.
  • Images: High-resolution photos, your logo in vector format (SVG or EPS) and, if applicable, team photos.
  • Access credentials: Domain registrar, existing hosting, email accounts, Google Analytics account if available.
  • Legal mandatory information: Legal notice and privacy policy in accordance with the Swiss Data Protection Act (revFADP). Your agency can advise, but legal responsibility lies with you.

Why a website is no luxury for Swiss SMEs

99.7 % of all market-economy companies in Switzerland are SMEs – that is around 607’000 businesses (source: FSO, Structural Business Statistics STATENT, reference year 2022). Many of them compete locally for the same customers. A professional website is not a nice-to-have but your digital shop window – open around the clock.

The Swiss digital advertising market was estimated at around CHF 2.8 billion for 2023 (source: Stiftung Werbestatistik Schweiz, Werbeaufwand Schweiz 2024). That shows your competition is already investing in digital visibility. The question is not whether you need a professional website, but how quickly you act.

Having a website built in Switzerland – making the right decision

Whether CHF 5’000 or CHF 30’000 – the right level of investment depends on your goals. A tradesperson in Bern does not need a CHF 40’000 website. But a management consultancy in Zurich that generates leads through its website should not skimp in the wrong place. Before any conversation with an agency, clarify three things: what should the website achieve for your business? Which functions are indispensable, which desirable? And what is your realistic budget, including running costs?

This clarity saves you quote ping-pong and leads to results faster.
